About
I make music. On my computer. Most of it can be described as ‘80s-inspired. Some of my more recent output includes some ‘90s to early ‘00s stuff as well.
Lore
[1991-1993]
Attempts at learning the guitar.
[1993-1995]
Pasty Swedish teenage rap duo in the school basement.
[1995-1996]
One day in 1995 I sat down in front of my computer and loaded up a music tracker program called "Scream Tracker 3" that I had downloaded off of a friend’s BBS, and decided I’d try and make a song.
My first attempts at making tunes revolved mostly around hip hop beats, drum & bass and other electronic music genres popular at the time. Early inspirations (in no particular order) included acts like DJ Shadow, LTJ Bukem, Photek, Future Sound of London, DJ Krush, Dillinja, Nujabes, Portishead, most things Warp/Rephlex-related and many others.
[1996-2003]
A few years later I became very involved with the Demoscene through IRC, and joined groups like SAE and Beepdealers, which was where I started actually “releasing” music for the first time. I also made music for various groups affiliated with the "Warez" scene (“Class”, “Origin”, “Razor 1911” and others) which led to a bunch of my tracks being used for custom installers for cracked apps and games. Most of my output at this time consisted of chiptunes, doskpop, "Gameboy/LSDJ" tracks and other experimental electronic stuff under various aliases such as datachild, arcade_kid, produkt (lower case for aesthetics!) and a few others you’ve very likely never heard of or that have been permanently scrubbed from the Internet.
[2003-2005]
After years of strictly Demoscene stuff I felt like I should try and “modernize”, and started looking into more contemporary ways of making electronic music compared to what I’d been using up to this point (trackers like ST3, IT, LSDJ and some FT2). I tried out various DAWs like Fruity Loops (now FL Studio), Cubase, ReBirth / Reason among others but never really vibed with any of them (besides Reason which I used for a little while), and eventually realized I was making less and less music. I also wasn’t enjoying the process as much as during the tracker/Demoscene days, so I switched focus onto other, non-music-related things for a few years.
[2005-2008]
I don’t remember exactly how I discovered Renoise but I fell in love with it instantly, and it’s (basically) the only DAW I’ve used since the day I installed it for the first time, some 20 years ago now. To have a music tracker that functioned like a modern DAW, with VST and (limited) MIDI support was like everything I’d ever wanted. It made it fun to make music again, and at this point I don’t think any of my projects that came after would’ve ever existed were it not for Renoise.
So, I slowly got back into the habit of making music daily again, trying out all kinds of different genres, a lot of (again) hip hop beats, chiptunes and especially electro (in the vein of acts like DMX Krew, Legowelt, Imatran Voima, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Anthony Rother, Bunker records in general). This eventually turned me on to ‘80s electro and ‘80s music in general. One day at work I was brainstorming artist names with a co-worker and came up with the combination of “Mitch” and “Murder”, and figured I’d use it for a collection of hip hop beats I’d been working on. Mitch Murder - Tracks became the first MM project, and even though it was just a bunch of one-off beats never intended for release, I held on to the name for whatever reason.
